Homerton University Hospital

Homerton is a small, friendly district general hospital in Hackney. It serves a diverse local population with high rates of obesity, TB, HIV, and sickle cell disease. The hospital serves a local obstetric population that is frequently high risk and has a tertiary NICU so receives a number of intrauterine transfers.

There is a dedicated bariatric theatre with approximately 15 major bariatric cases each week. A small number of paediatric general surgical and dental cases are done as day cases. The CT1 rota does not include nights with on calls (with consultant supervision) from day one providing early exposure to emergency work.

More senior trainees are on the “obstetric” rota covering non-elective obstetrics when on call (long days, weekends and nights) and otherwise working in main theatres or day surgery. The mixed ITU/ HDU caters for medical and surgical patients and provides outreach support for the wards and A&E including the stabilisation and treatment of critically unwell children awaiting transfer. Specialist ECHO and ultrasound training is available.
